Common Core Standards

Illinois has joined other states in adopting new Common Core State Standards to guide teaching and learning, and District 228 is moving toward alignment with those new standards.

The new K-12 math and English/Language Arts standards adopted by the Illinois State Board of Education are known as the New Illinois Learning Standards Incorporating the Common Core.

According to the ISBE, these evidence-based standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world and “better prepare Illinois students for success in college and the workforce in a competitive global economy.” The standards are designed to help students and parents clearly understand what students are expected to attain each year; the standards also are designed to allow teachers to establish the best approach to help their students succeed.

District 228 has begun incorporating these new standards into instruction, and assessments based on the new standards will replace the Illinois Standards Achievement Test (ISAT) beginning in 2014.

The new elementary math curriculum GoMath is aligned with the Common Core Standards for mathematics. District 228’s curriculum for reading, writing, speaking and listening, and language, will be aligned with the Common Core by 2014.
