Standards-Based Grading Scale

Here is an explanation of the Standards-Based Grading Scale that our district has started adopting in certain classes.

4

Advanced

In addition to level 3 performance, the student demonstrates in-depth inferences and applications.

"I understand it well and can apply my understanding in a different application."

3

Proficient

The student independently completes the standard with no major errors or omissions.

"I can apply it just the way the teacher taught it."

2

Developing

The student independently shows understanding of fundamental processes and specific vocabulary for the standard.

"I am starting to understand it, but I need some help."

1

Beginning

With significant help, the student demonstrates partial success at level 2.

"I can do it with help."

0

Not Enough Evidence

Even with help, no understanding was demonstrated or no evidence was submitted.

"I don't get any of this, even with lots of help." OR "I haven’t demonstrated my learning."

4 - Advanced

Students that achieve a 4 can take the information that is taught in class and apply it beyond what is expected or required for the learning standard. Students that achieve a 4 can make inferences based on the content taught and connect the learning standard with other content taught.

3 - Proficient

Students that achieve a 3 can take the information that is taught in class and apply it as stated in the learning standard. Students that achieve a 3 can independently complete complex processes and apply the content as it has been shown in class.

2 - Developing

Students that achieve a 2 understand specific vocabulary and can complete the foundational skills needed for the learning standard. They cannot complete the more complex aspects of the learning standard without assistance.

1 - Beginning

Students that achieve a 1 need help with the vocabulary and foundational skills needed for the learning standard. They cannot complete the more complex aspects of the learning standards without significant assistance.

0 - No Evidence

Students that achieve a 0 are unable to provide evidence of understanding even with significant help regarding vocabulary and foundational skills, or they have not submitted evidence for assessment.
