GHS students explore opportunities at job fair and career expo

Geneseo High School hosted approximately 55 businesses and organizations for a job fair and career expo on Friday morning at the Geneseo Foundation Activity Center.

“We were really happy with the turnout and it was great to see how our students engaged with the professionals on hand,” said Travis Mackey, the event organizer and the Director of the Career & Technical Education Center.

The second annual job fair and career expo provided GHS students, from seniors to freshmen, with a chance to learn about jobs in the local community and surrounding area, as well as the education and skills needed to be considered for different roles.

“Most students have an idea of what they might be interested in doing, so the big thing is for them to get connected with businesses in those areas,” Mackey explained. “That allows them to get a better understanding of what a business does and what a career would involve.”

Mackey continued, “Along the way, students may uncover a variety of opportunities whether that’s learning a local construction company has an engineering program or discovering that some programs will pay for part of a student's college education. By having those conversations, students become more aware of what their surroundings look like.”

A wide variety of organizations participated in the event, allowing students to learn more about the different career pathways highlighted at GHS: Business, Marketing and Computers; Agricultural Education; Family and Computer Sciences; Technology, Construction and Engineering; and Health Sciences.

“Our hope for an event like this is that it is a win for our students and a win for the companies,” said Mackey. “It’s a great learning experience for the students and for the companies, it’s a way for them to engage with future members of the workforce.”
