GHS group focuses on student well-being and school culture

Members of Geneseo High School’s Student Welfare and Advisory Group were recognized by Principal Tom Ryerson and Assistant Principal Jeremy Mosier at Thursday’s Board of Education meeting.

The Student Welfare and Advisory Group (SWA) consists of four class presidents and vice-presidents, the student council president, and two at-large members.

In attendance at the board meeting were Quinn Cherry, Viola Pettit, Reyhan Onder, Dylan Gehl, Aaron Betcher, Marley Cherry, Kwin VanKerrebroeck and Payton Snider. Other members of the group include Evelyn DeBaene, Kendyl Wassenhove and Anna Davis.

“There are a lot of great things that happen in our building, but on occasion, challenges arise,” said Mr. Ryerson. “While some issues can be addressed by our staff, with others, we like to involve this group of students to brainstorm, hear their thoughts, and come up with solutions.”

The SWA meets monthly with Mr. Mosier to discuss issues that impact student well-being and school culture. The group provides a platform for students to share feedback, voice concerns, and offer suggestions for improving the overall school experience.

By collaborating directly with school leadership, SWA members play an active role in shaping policies and initiatives that promote a positive and supportive learning environment.

The group’s work has resulted in action taken on a variety of issues, including scheduling, teacher recognition, food selections, questions and concerns for the school’s administrative team, and improving school spirit.

“In addition to the students helping find solutions, they are able to build upon their own leadership capacities,” said Mr. Mosier. “They are the ones who drive each meeting’s agenda, collect feedback from their peers, and make informed decisions to improve our school. It’s a group that is committed to working together and ensuring students’ voices are heard.”
