Alleman Catholic High School has informed Geneseo High School that it will forfeit the varsity football game scheduled for Friday, October 17, due to injuries and low numbers of player availability.
However, there will be football and Senior Night festivities on Friday at Bob Reade Field.
GHS will host a single underclass game starting at 7 p.m. that will feature player warmups, the pregame tunnel, and performances by The Sound of Geneseo marching band and Maplettes at halftime.
Senior Night ceremonies will start at 6:15 p.m. and gates will open for fans at 5:30 p.m.
“We will try to make this as close to a varsity atmosphere as possible to honor our seniors and salvage an unfortunate situation,” said Joe Nichols, Athletic Director.
Alleman’s forfeit will result in a win for the Green Machine, which will improve to 6-2 overall and 5-1 in the Western Big 6 Conference. Geneseo will close out its regular season at Quincy Senior High School on Friday, October 24.
"We're disappointed our varsity team won't have an opportunity to compete but understand this is a tough situation for Alleman and their football program, and we support putting player safety first," said GHS Varsity Football Head Coach Matt Furlong. "We're looking forward to recognizing our seniors, who have all contributed to our successes on and off the field, and their families. We'll make the best of this situation and then shift our focus to closing out the regular season in Quincy."
