Geneseo football looking for a new head coach

For just the fifth time since 1962, Geneseo High School is searching for someone to lead its storied football program.

Following the recent announcement that Larry Johnsen Jr. will step down after 20 seasons, the school will be hiring a new varsity head coach and is now accepting applications at GeneseoSchools.org.

The significance of the hire is not lost on Geneseo High School’s Athletic Director, Joe Nichols.

“It’s obviously a very important role because football has meant so much to our community over the last six decades,” said Nichols. “We want someone who will embrace the challenges that come with leading a program with a great deal of history and tradition, and work towards building on its legacy.”

Nichols said the ideal candidate will also teach at GHS. While head varsity coaching experience is preferred, it is not required. He believes that beyond Geneseo football’s rich history and tradition, the role comes with as many resources and as much support as nearly any other high school coaching job in Illinois.

“It goes back to how passionate the community is about its football program,” said Nichols. “We’re very fortunate to have outstanding facilities and the support in Geneseo for its schools and athletics and all extracurriculars is unmatched in our region. We do everything we can to put our student-athletes in a position to succeed.”

The home of the Green Machine is Bob Reade Field, which is named after the legendary coach who led Geneseo to state championships in 1976, 1977 and 1978, as well as the "mythical" state title in 1970 before IHSA playoffs. The stadium was renovated in 2016 with a new, eight-lane all-weather track, seating for 2,500 fans on the home side, and an astroturf field.

Other facilities at GHS include the Geneseo Foundation Activity Center, a 40,000-square-foot fieldhouse and weight room that opened in 2004. Additionally, in conjunction with Hammond-Henry Hospital, the district hired a full-time strength and conditioning coach in 2022.

“We anticipate a lot of interest in the role,” acknowledged Nichols. “We’ll be diligent and thorough, and we’re optimistic that we’ll find not only the best fit, but the right fit, someone who can pick up where Coach Johnsen left off and make our community proud.”
