Congratulations to our most recent recipients of a Maple Leaf Medallion at Millikin Elementary! Mrs. VanHyfte, Mrs. Wyffels, and Mrs. Holevoet make significant contributions supporting teachers and students in the classroom and keeping our students safe on the playground. They are also adaptable and substitute in classrooms as needed. We are blessed to have these outstanding para professionals!
As the 2023-24 school year begins to wind down, teachers throughout Geneseo Community Unit School District #228 are being recognized as part of National Teacher Day (May 7) and Teacher Appreciation Week (May 6-10).

It was a wonderful night of music at the 55th Annual All Unit Choir Concert. Grades 4 all the way up to Graduating Seniors sang their hearts out in front of a capacity crowd in the GHS's Concert Hall.
Today we held our end of year celebration with senior students who have been in the Grow Your Own Teacher Course all year long. Students in this class had 3 days of instruction and 2 days of being in classrooms with mentor teachers every week! Students held a breakfast with their mentor teachers this a.m. to thank them and to say something nice about them. Students who plan to continue to go into the teaching field in college did a signing ceremony in the theater after breakfast! Each student received a local scholarship as well! Congratulations to all of our students and staff who helped make this a great first year! We have another group of students signed up for next year!
We appreciated beekeepers Wendy Loitz and Mike Pries (and wife Ethel) coming today to teach the preschoolers about beekeeping and the importance of bees in our environment. They even brought some honey to taste!

Plants will be sold at the Ag Lab on Saturday, May 4 (10 am-1 pm), Monday, May 6 (3-5 pm) and Thursday, May 9 (3-5 pm).
This week, 7th grade ELA students led their own Socratic Seminar of research, debate and written reflection on various historical disasters. Whether the Titanic, Hindenburg, Halifax, or Chernobyl, every student engaged in direct debate, peer evaluation, peer feedback or an online topic chat. What an awesome week of high level learning, great job Mrs. Haars and Mrs. Schmidt!

Mrs. Dickey was nominated by GHS sophomore Annabelle Ropp, who wrote: "She makes everyone's day a little better. I feel like she genuinely cares about the students at GHS. Preschool has been growing caterpillars. They emerged from their chrysalis’ on April 19th and 20th and the students released them on April 25th. We definitely had some very curious minds as they observed.
4th grade students enjoyed a presentation from the Geneseo Historical Museum on the Underground Railroad last week. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with our students!
Geneseo Schools hosted the annual Recorder Concert tonight at the GHS Concert Hall. From 5th grade recorders whistlin some Star Wars, to the 6th grade Band doin a Stone Age Stomp, and a finale that included our GHS Honors Band with a little Pixar Movie Magic. Now, it's time for 5th graders to "Try Out" those instruments and join band in 6th grade.
It's Springtime and a great night for the GMS Spring Dance. Our kids had an absolute blast jumping, laughing, singing and even doing a little dancing!

Mrs. Cherry was nominated by GHS senior Kylie Maertens, who wrote: "Mrs. Cherry has always brightened up my day any time I have been in the front office. She demonstrates the CARE category especially because she is always willing to answer any of my questions and go out of her way to help me and others."
Kylie continued, "She consistently creates connections with students and genuinely cares for their well being. She represents the Geneseo School District through her actions and smiling face when you come through the front doors of the high school. I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to know Mrs. Cherry!"

GMS hosted our annual Career Fair for 8th graders this week. More than two dozen businesses, Geneseo Police, Chamber of Commerce, and Park District all joined our students and staff in this college and career exploration event. Thank you to all our honored guests, Mrs. Feely, Mrs. Reed, Mrs. Francque, Mrs. Plant and Mr. Mackey for all you did to make this a success.
Geneseo Middle School was honored on April 23rd with the IESA Divisional Sportsmanship Award. This is a huge honor, voted on by our surrounding districts, our competitors. It's an award that says GMS is a fun, safe and great place to compete. Thank you to all the student-athletes, parents, coaches, refs and fans, and to our AD Mr. Pardoe for creating this culture of excellence!
Millikin 4th graders helped clean up the garden bed in front of the elementary school in honor of Earth Day. They made light work of this challenging task. Once the weeding was finished, they spread wildflower seeds throughout the garden to help the pollinators and beautify the school grounds.
Leafs take on Rock Island Edison and Washington tonight in our final GMS regular season home track meet. 7th and 8th grade boys and girls had some incredible distances, jumps and times as each group took down the Rocks.
