We’re excited to welcome Delaney O’Brien, our new 4th grade teacher at Northside Elementary. O’Brien, who attended Spoon River College and graduated from Western Illinois University with a Bachelor of Science in elementary education, has been a substitute teacher for all grade levels, as well as a daycare teacher. She did her block teaching at Lincoln Elementary in Macomb and completed her student teaching at West Prairie South Elementary in Colchester. “The best part about teaching is seeing the spark in students’ eyes when they are learning,” O’Brien says. “That ‘a-ha!’ moment is priceless for teachers, and it’s memorable for students as well. I aim to motivate students by creating a positive, welcoming classroom environment where growth is encouraged and prioritized. I am so excited to join the incredible staff at Northside this school year!”

Please join us in welcoming Laurel Filzen Etzel, our new music teacher at Northside Elementary. Filzen Etzel earned a bachelor’s degree in music from Western Illinois University, a master’s degree in music from Western Michigan University, and is currently working towards another master’s in teaching and music at WIU. She has taught all ages from toddler through college in many different settings and has over 10 years of experience teaching. “I enjoy meeting students where they are to make a meaningful connection with them, which brings me and the student joy!” says Filzen Etzel. “This connection, in turn, builds trust and helps us to grow and learn together. I believe in building students up and helping each of my students to be confident individuals when they are making music, of course, but also when they are not making music—leading each one to be the most authentic version of themselves!”
